Information about counter strike game server hosting

counter strike game server hosting Products we recommend

dreamhost.com

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

dreamhost "offers" Miva shopping cart hosting, but they only have one person
trained in Miva support, so if your store has a problem when that person is gone
- good luck!

My store has been down for almost 3 weeks, and I am in the process of
transferring to a new host. dreamhost customer service has been extremely slow,
frequently choosing to file my service requests into one person or another's
folder, rather than tell me anything. When I have heard back, I have been given
varying promises of attention and a fix, but nothing has happened, and no one
has bothered to tell me why.

Key to the whole problem is the apparent fact that dreamhost has not a clue of
what e-commerce is all about. While other hosts might be in a full-blown panic
if their e-commerce sites were down for a couple of hours, dreamhost is quite
content to allow the situation to go on indefinitely. Very unprofessional in
their approach.

I know of several other dreamhost Miva sites that are transferring, or have
transfered, to new hosts. So, most likely in the near future they will be
hosting very few Miva sites, and their competence in the area can be expected to
fall even further.

Questions about web design companies

Today`s suggestion:

We were hosted on 1and1 for over 2 years. I must say, the first 1.5 year was OK.
No major issue although some downtime from now and then. But the last 6 months
have been a real nightmare. Multiple outages, complete server failures needing
full mailbox restores (4 times), lost e-mails (corrupted new e-mails that could
not be recovered), you name it. We are switching providers ASAP. Two of my users
are currently receiving mail thru a POP server because their Exchange account is
still down (over 2 weeks now). I cannot recommend this hosting provider to
anyone. They have the best rates, but the worst uptime and support so its not
worth it.

SEO Fiction

Tue, 22 Apr 2008 13:29:21 +0000
SEO fiction from the SEO contest called retsambew dash klat for charity. Can you guess the keyword phrase we competed for?

Now when people start to find your website online it is important that your website has relevant and interesting content so that your visitors stay online longer. The longer they stay the more chances they will buy.

NO, NOT REALLY!

Basically, there are 2 kinds of web sites:

Information on your most popular pages should lead you to quickly creating more pages based on the popular topics and content contained in those pages that your prospects love most. The next thing to do is to link to your new pages from your older popular pages. This single step will translate to your visitors spending more time on your site. Research has proved beyond any doubt that the longer your prospects spend on your site, the more profitable they will end up being to you.

The hosting service works fine, although we have a very low volume of traffic
(less then 500mb a month). Unfortunately, from time to time, every few days, our
email would stop arriving. We wouldn't actually loose any mail, but email would
be delayed by as much as an hour sometimes. We complained about this to
ixwebhosting a few times through their online live chat help. No resolution
came, even though I even contacted them at the moment when our email was NOT
working - so they could experience the problem as well during 'live chat' help.
Later I recieved an email saying that they tested our email, and that we have no
problem and that ticket has been 'resolved' (not!). Just like every previous
time. They know it is an intermittent problem and they check once in a blue moon
and based on that conclude that everything is fine. So email problems stay
unresolved. Too bad, it seemed like a good deal and a good place for one's
hosting needs.

A ix web hosting review is usually positive. This is because ixwebhosting.com
uses cPanel as the ixweb hosting control panel. This makes it easy to use for
people who are just starting out as webmasters. There are a lot of new customers
who sign up with one of the other top ten hosting companies and get frustrated
right away. This is because these companies have gotten too large to take on the
new and smaller accounts and dont really have the 24/7 support staff that can
teach beginners how to manage their site. What a lot of people dont realize is
that customer support from the top ten companies doesnt mean webmaster teaching
or hand-holding. ixwebhosting.com seems to take this into stride and doesnt
seem to mind the extra time it takes to coach someone along.

ixwebhosting.com has been around since 1999. They have over 180 employees and
host about 200,000 domains. They have three basic plans, Expert Plan, Business
Plus, and Unlimited Pro. The plans start at $6 a month and go up to $15. They
seem to get compared to Bluhost.com a lot, probably because their services are
the most comparable, although BlueHost seems to get higher rankings for a
customer-support staff that users claim are more knowledgeable. ixwebhosting.com
is fully compatible with Windows, Linux and Mac OS, which is handy.

Get ixwebhosting Now

Other than that, it isnt very remarkably different from the other hosting
companies who keep dropping prices and providing more hosting services. A few
extra features are included in the starting price, but in this extremely
competitive industry its hard to know how long that will last. In fact,
comparative reviews pitting one hosting company against another are increasing
as the consumer becomes more educated about how hosting companies quickly change
prices and services as everyone scrambles to make a quick buck off the internet.
ixwebhosting.com looks like one of the good companies, but again, provides the
same service everyone else has.

The Expert plan ($5.95 a month) includes unlimited domains, 600 gigs of disk
space, one free domain registration, 6,000 gigs of data transfer, and unlimited
subdomains. The Business plan ($8.95 a month) includes unlimited domains, 1,000
gigs of disk space, two free domain registrations, 8,000 gigs of data transfer,
and unlimited subdomains. Unlimited pro ($14.95 a month) includes unlimited
domains, unlimited disk space, three free domain registrations, 10,000 gigs of
data transfer, and unlimited subdomains. Some features like the site builder are
free and other optional features like credit card processing are reasonably
priced, but if you are serious about e-commerce, you are going to pay more here
and there.

Of course, the cpanel makes webhosting easy to use right from the start. It
doesnt have as many icons as other hosting companies, but the Getting Started
Wizard is next to the Video Tutorials icon which makes getting started faster
for newcomers to web site management. The Logs section is at the top of the
panel which is convenient and includes icons for latest visitors, bandwidth,
Webelizer, Webelizer FTP, raw access logs, analog stats, and error log. The rest
of the panel is made up of standards like E-mail accounts, MX entry, FTP
accounts, Cron jobs, SSH/Shell manager, GnuPG keys, MySQL databases, etc.

Probably the biggest selling point for ixwebhosting.com is that while they are
shared hosting, they still own the company themselves and dont look like they
are looking at selling anytime soon. This makes them a more reliable and stable
company for people who dont have the luxury of becoming the causalities of
corporate mergers that are causing unnecessary downtime for sites these days.
Hopefully, ixwebhosting.com will stay the course of being independent and
continue to get good reviews.

Company information

hostgator is one of the fastest growing companies in the web hosting industry.
It has been talked about a lot on popular web hosting forums like
WebHostingTalk.com for example. The company has been founded in 2002 and by the
time of this review their site says that more than 200,000 domains are hosted on
their servers.

hostgator hosting facilities are located in the one of the best Internet data
centers in US: The Planet (www.theplanet.com) Dallas/TX, USA.

hostgator is one of the so called GigaHosts, but it looks like so far they
manage to deliver what they promise.

Equipment

The company offers Linux based hosting. By the time of our review the servers
were running Linux Red Hat 9.0. The server where our account has been located
was running 4 x Intel(R) Xeon(TM) 2.40GHz CPUs with 4GB RAM and a 200GB SCSI
drive.

hostgator hosting environment is based on Cpanel/WHM - one of the most popular
web hosting Control panel software packages. It is feature-rich and easy to use.

Services and features

hostgator offers shared hosting packages, reseller hosting plans and dedicated
servers. I would not recommend their dedicated servers as they are pricey.
However, the Shared and Reseller plans are quite a good deal.

Shared hosting plans: The cheapest plan costs only $6.95/month paid on yearly
basis and includes 3.5GB of web space and 50GB of transfer per month. It is
quite a lot of space at quite a reasonable price. It has all the regular
features Control Panel, Webmail, scripting languages, databases, a free scripts
Installer (Fantastico), anti-spam protection, etc. With the cheapest plan you
can host only one web site per hosting account. If you wish to have multiple
sites hosted (multi-domain hosting) you will need to go for a more expensive
plan where prices start $9.95/mo and you have the option to pay on a monthly
basis. With the shared hosting plans you can host multiple sites; however they
are add-on domains. (e.g. you do not have separate Control Panel for each hosted
web site)

Semi-dedicated plans: At first we thought these are kind of VPS plans, however
after we talked to an online sales rep on their site it appeared that these
semi-dedicated packages actually are like shared hosting plans, however they
include more resources (25GB space, 500GB transfer) and most importantly what
makes them different from a shared hosting plan is that the server where the
semi-dedicated plans are located host relatively small number of users. That is
you share the server resources with less users and in this way you have more CPU
power at your disposal. For example if you have 300-400 users on a regular
shared hosting server, when you are on a semi-dedicated you will share the
server with only 15-20 other customers. Of course the pricing is much higher
compared to a shared hosting plan $74.95/mo.

Reseller hosting plans: Starting $24.95/mo you can purchase a reseller hosting
account with 5GB of web space and 50GB of bandwidth. The reseller package gives
you the option to host separate websites using a single reseller account. If you
are a web designer a reseller account might by the right option for you as you
will be able to offer you clients decent hosting services. hostgator even went
one step ahead and offer some great tools for resellers, such as Billing manager
application, merchant accounts, ready-to-use templates and even a free domain
name registration account with one of the biggest registrars eNom.com. So if you
are looking for a place to host multiple sites with separate Control Panels
hostgator is worth trying out.

Dedicated servers: As mentioned above hostgator services include dedicated
server packages as well. The offerings start with a 2.4 GHz Super Celeron to
Dual 2.4 GHz Xeons servers. So in case your site outgrows the shared or
semi-dedicated hosting plans you may go to a dedicated server. All servers are
equipped with a Panel/WHM which makes the server management an easy task.

Customer service/support

hostgator offers 24/7 customer support over email, phone and live chat. While
weve been testing our account, we had several interactions with their support.
Usually, we got replies in 15-20 minutes. However on some occasions it took a
bit more. Our questions varied from simple howtos through some more
advanced/tech related ones and finally some requests that should be handled by
3rd level support (which usually take more time to be completed than a regular
support request). Almost all of our requests have been handled properly. The
only problem they fail to resolve was a question regarding a PHP script. We saw
they have the PHP engine running as CGI and decided to check their knowledge in
PHP. Weve created a sample HTTP Auth script (actually we took the example
provided at http://www.php.net/features.http-auth) and uploaded it to our
account. Just of reference, when PHP is running as CGI HTTPAuth will not work
properly (this is a limitation by design). The support person who handled the
ticket was unaware of this limitation and provided us with some wrong answers.

In general the support reps were friendly and polite, even we acted as a bad
customer and even weve been rude in some of our requests. Our overall rating
for their support is 9 out of 10.

Signup process

The signup process is easy and intuitive. They accept a wide range of payment
options, including: Credit card payments (VISA/MasterCard/American Express),
Paypal, checks, bank transfers, cash and money orders.

In general you will get the account active in 20-30 minutes after your payment
has been processes.

However with our signup we encountered a little trouble. When you go through
their order process at some step you are asked to specify username and password
for your new hosting account. For the matter of simplicity we used one and the
same word for both our username and password. The order form accepted these
values, however later on it appeared that they have created an issue. Most
probably hostgator use some hosting automation software to open hosting accounts
when they receive a payment. However, the Cpanel has a restriction for username
and password similarity. So when we placed our order their billing system failed
to activate the account on the hosting server and the hosting account email we
have received was incomplete and was missing the hosting server IP address. So,
we have been unable to use the account as actually the account has not been
created at all. Luckily, the troubles have been resolved in several support
tickets and email messages and a short live chat session.

Overall experience

Our overall experience with hostgator is positive. Although we have used their
services for a month we had no major problems and the hosting account
performance and speed were at a very good level. The only issues we had were the
ones we have already described above. Despite these, we would recommend
hostgator to anybody looking for a web host. They offer quality and reliable,
feature-rich services backed up with friendly and prompt support.

Glossary Of Web Hosting Terms

Mon, 24 Mar 2008 14:53:47 +0000

Having recently launched the free ebook "An Absolute Beginners Guide To Web Hosting " I decided that it would be useful to include a glossary of hosting terms for those readers unfamiliar with some of the industry terminology. There follows a run down of some of the most commonly used phrases together with a brief translation of each.

1) Web Host

A web host or web server is basically a computer connected to the Internet. The function of this computer is to serve up websites to internet users and is more powerful than a regular PC. These servers contain all the data stored by website owners that is required for their website(s) to be displayed online to the world at large.

There are various types of web hosting services available to serve varying needs.

a) Free Hosts - Generally speaking, free web hosting is a solution usually suited only to those who intend to set up a non commercial web site or perhaps to blog as a hobby. Usually, free hosting services offer only limited storage space and bandwidth. Free hosts often make their money by placing ads of various types on customer’s websites - these may include banners, pop-ups and text advertising, over which the user has no control. There are however some exceptions to this and in recent times more free hosting offers have been introduced with far better features.

Reliability, best performance and customer support can be lacking in the case of free hosting as well. Although customers of free hosts can usually use their own domain name if they have one, others will be given a subdomain name that includes the name of the host (for example yourname.freehostingcompany.com) which, for business or professional use does not carry the weight of your own domain.

b) Shared Hosting - Probably the most common option, hosting a huge number of sites across the internet. Shared hosting is popular due to cost and is most suited to personal users and small to medium business sites. Prices will vary widely and users can expect to pay from as little as a couple of dollars per month through to $40 per month depending on the features and level of the service.

With shared hosting, each server is shared among an indeterminate number of customers. Each website owner has a share of the storage space and the resources of the server. The higher the number of users allocated to a server, the lower the cost, but also the less resources available to each individual. The more expensive companies are less likely to overcrowd their servers resulting in improved performance and availability of their customer’s websites.

With a shared hosting plan, customers are usually able to host more than one domain name under a single account plus subdomains and parked domains but in all cases the allowances will differ. Whatever features are offered, all will be subject to the limits placed on the account in terms of space and resources per month.

c) Dedicated Hosts - As the name suggests, a server is dedicated to a single customer. Dedicated hosting is the choice of larger and higher traffic sites that need more resources than a shared host can provide. Customers rent and have total control over the server and can configure it to suit their purposes.

Their are varying service levels with dedicated hosting. A customer can opt to have a managed solution - in other words, the hosting company’s technical team will set up and maintain certain aspects on the customer’s behalf, or you can choose to manage the server yourself. As most webmasters are not hardware experts, a managed dedicated server is usually the best option. Costs for a dedicated server are naturally much higher than a shared service and can run into hundreds of dollars per month. Once again a lot depends on the level of service and support you expect or need.

The term co-located hosting refers to an arrangement whereby the customer purchases the server hardware outright and the hardware is then located at the hosting provider’s data center. Naturally the cost of co-located hosting is higher because the customer has to shoulder the cost of the hardware and it’s upkeep and repair.

d) VPS or Virtual Private Server Hosts - VPS (also called virtual dedicated servers) are an option for those who are looking for more than shared hosting but either cannot afford or justify their own dedicated server. In very basic terms, VPS are servers that do not interface directly with the hardware on which they run and they cannot interface directly with each other. The server is therefore ‘virtual’ and ‘private’ in the sense that it is independent of actual hardware and cannot interact with its file system or processes. VPS pricing varies greatly and is again dependent on the provider and the resources/services on offer, but normally prices should be expected to be higher than a shared host but lower than a dedicated service.

Other Hosting Services

Reseller hosting is a commonly offered service and basically means that a customer of a hosting company buys space on the hosting company’s servers and resell it to their own customers. Resellers will set their own prices and features of the hosting plans they decide to resell. The reseller consequently deals with his customers and their queries and complaints, although sometimes reseller plans are offered by companies who will take care of customer care themselves. A reseller is effectively a ‘middle man’ and his responsibilities will vary according to the company or companies with which he works.

Domain Name

A domain name is the permanent address of a website on the internet. The actual address of a website is a set of numbers and every web server has its own unique address. To remember these numbers would be virtually impossible and the domain name is an easily recognizable translation for human beings. Domain names are available with various suffixes such as .com or .net and each is unique. Buying and registering a domain name is a simple process and there are hundreds of places where customers can obtain the name of their choice. Prices vary from free into thousands of dollars but customers can usually register a domain for less than $20. There is an annual fee for owning a domain, and you can choose to register it for anything from a 12 months and up.

Space / Storage

The amount of storage space available on the server for your website - all it’s files, images and databases. Just like the storage space available on the hard drive of your own computer if you like. How much you will need depends on a whole range of things but nowadays most hosting companies offer more than adequate storage on shared servers for most users.

Bandwidth / Data Transfer

Bandwidth is the term used for the amount of data transferred from a web server to client’s s computer. Whenever a person views a web page, the data is transmitted from the server to that person’ PC. Websites containing audio, video and image files or one offering lots of downloadable content consume more bandwidth than a simple text based site. The bandwidth available to customers will again vary tremendously from host to host and service level to service level.

Just because a shared host claims to offer huge bandwidth allowances does not necessarily make it so as other limits on the account such a CPU (central processor unit) resources will also come into play.

Users who exceed their bandwidth for a given month are sometimes charged for the excess or simply find their website(s) taken offline until the end of the month. Neither is something you really want to happen for obvious reasons.

Server Type

This relates to the operating system than runs the web server. Common OS types include Windows, Linux and UNIX. This has no bearing on the OS of your own PC. The server type will also affect the server side scripting (see below) and database types. The difference between Windows server and Linux/UNIX is that Windows runs ASP and ASP.NET with Access or SQL Server databases where as Linux/UNIX servers usually runs CGI, PHP or JSP with MySQL or Oracle databases. The other difference is that Windows servers are more expensive than Linux/UNIX servers - Linux is an open source OS (in other words it’s free software) whereas Windows is a commercial application that you are doubtless familiar with if you are a PC user. Linux is probably more common because of this, but either will be satisfactory for most webmaster’s needs.

Server Side Scripting

PHP is the preferred server side scripting today because there are hundreds of open source or GPL PHP scripts available for webmasters to use. Many hosts include a collection of such scripts that can be quickly and easily be installed. However PHP does have its limitations and features required by some advanced websites as does the use of MySQL and some professional web developers still prefer to use ASP.NET or JSP while some prefer Cold Fusion, CGI, ASP or PERL.

Databases

There are various different types of databases available. The most commonly used is MySQL as it is open source GPL (free) software and can serve a lot of online applications’ requirements such as forums, blogs, content management, mailing lists, etc. Again however, it has its limitations and whilst normally sufficient for for smaller concerns it might not be powerful enough to cope with complicated large business sites. More powerful requirements are served better by databases such as Oracle or SQL Server.

Email

Most people are familiar with email of course but in relation to hosting it is worth a quick explanation. Most paid hosting accounts will include email accounts accounts with the customer’s domain. The number and size of email accounts totally depends on the individual hosting plan. Generally this feature is not included in free hosting but there are some exceptions. Small plans provide as little as 10 accounts whereas some will place no limit on the number available to you. Usually these email accounts are web based and also accessible through POP3 clients. Having your own dot com email address is a must for those doing business online - far more professional than using a personal or free email account which can often be detrimental to the perception of your business.

File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

File Transfer Protocol is the common way of transferring files across the Internet. Most webmasters use FTP to upload and download their website’s contents. The process of uploading or downloading is performed by using FTP client software and there are many free programs available. An FTP username and password will be provided to hosting customers to enable them to access their web server. Some hosts provide more than one FTP account to their customers according to their requirements.

Uptime / Downtime

There is little point in having a website if it is constantly unavailable for visitors. Downtime (periods of unavailability) need to be kept to a minimum as they can be very costly in terms of lost opportunities and business. Most hosts will claim uptime as a percentage such as 99.9% and anything less is not desirable for a small or medium business. Nobody can truly guarantee 100% because hardware can never be relied on 100% but a host who offers guarantees as well as compensation for downtime is important. Mission critical sites cannot tolerate frequent outages and may use web monitoring services to notify hosts immediately a site goes down. Monitoring software is readily available for those who wish to keep a close eye on downtime.

Control Panel

The control panel is the web based interface used to administer all aspects of your websites and is fully explained in our free hosting ebook . It is where users manage things such as email accounts, statistics, FTP accounts, domains and sub-domains and databases. Some hosting companies use their own control panel and others will use third party applications such as cPanel, the most common Linux control panel in use today.

I hope this glossary, although not exhaustive, will be useful to newcomers and potential new hosting customers and clears up some of the terminology most commonly used.

Many of you think that starting a proxy Website isn’t worth it. Usually proxy Website need a lot of server resources, especially bandwidth, and you can’t put ads on the proxyfied pages. Well, this is true, but this doesn’t mean that starting a proxy Website won’t give you any revenue. There are many proxy websites out there, and for a good reason. I know it looks hard to get in the proxy business, but it really isn’t. There are many users that need to surf a site anonymously or his IP is banned for some reason. There are also schools and firms that block access to different websites like MySpace or YouTube so people need a proxy to be able to access them. There is a huge demand of free proxy websites and you too can get a piece of this traffic.

My question to you is - have you done anything like this before

- checking how much a domain name has produced within it’s

lifetime, be it money, or a site with a good Page Rank, and some

traffic to go with it? Did it pay several times it’s fee worth?

I've been with hostgator since around August of 2004. I signed up with a
reseller account to use as hosting for both myself and clients. My problems
began about a year ago with them, sometime in February or March of 2005 when one
of my sites was getting too much traffic. Now, I'm no fool. I understand that
shared hosting oversells and anyone who uses too many resources, even if still
within their quota, gets kicked off. What really shocked me, though, was no
warning. Not even emailing me after they had done it. Nothing, nada. I found out
by a member of the site that was suspended, someone I didn't even know, tracking
down my phone number and calling me.

I went to a dedicated server after that, but I kept my hostgator account for the
sites that were already hosted on it - about three client sites, as well as this
site right here.

Two days ago I come to post a blog and hmm, I get the suspended page. That's
weird. I check my email - no notices there. I log into their billing system -
nope, account not past due. What the heck? So I go to their online support chat
and ask them what's going on. I'm informed that I haven't paid my invoice. What
invoice? I have no invoice. I check my bank and I see that I in fact have not
paid them since January. But man, I could've swore I put it on automatic pay.
And hey, if there's no invoice, how can I pay anyway?! Isn't this a problem on
their end? They tell me I need to email sales.

Okay... so I email sales. 12 hours later, they email me back and inform me I
have an invoice, charging me all the way back to October. Uhhh? I KNOW I paid in
January, I have it in my bank statement. I check their billing system, and they
don't even have a backlog of that payment. Something really funky is going on
now. Their system is screwed up, but no matter who I talk to (and oh, I've
talked to everyone) nobody seems to know what's going on. Sales doesn't talk to
support, online support doesn't talk to phone support, so who the hell knows.

Strangely enough, while on the phone with a support guy who informed me I just
need to pay the invoice and then dispute it afterwards, I received an email from
a different support person that my account had been reactivated, and thank you
for the payment. Whaaat? Uh, whatever. At this point I'm just going to take what
I can get and run. Now I at least have backups of all my sites and am moving
them.

It's just astounding how bad a service this has been. I even posted on their
forums about it, in their "Customer Review" section, and it gets MOVED to
another section because I can't post a bad customer review simply because I
haven't paid. HELLO. I WANT TO PAY, JUST NOT MORE THAN I OWE. I NEED AN INVOICE.

Other problems I've had? Well, let's see. About a week ago my sites reverted
back a day and I could get no explanation on why. I had JUST looked at my access
logs the day before, happy about a new site that was already getting hits, and
the next day - logs are back to a day before. Weird. I contact online support
(bad idea, since it's always horrible support) and they have no idea. I guess I
imagined things?

UPDATE 4-20-07: Well, they finally just simply decided to take their bogus bonus
from my credit card that was filed with them, despite the fact that it's
incorrect, I didn't approve of the payment, or anything else. I've never seen
such bad service, support in my life. I can't even be bothered to dispute it
it's just so amazingly horrible.

UPDATE 10-18-07: I'm still with them, why? I don't know - so lazy when it comes
to my own websites. Anyway, so a couple days ago I notice my "main" reseller
account, the site is completely missing. Email is no longer working. I log into
Cpanel to see that it appears my whole site has disappeared. Cute!
